Chandrayaan mission

The Indian Chandrayaan mission refers to the series of lunar exploration missions conducted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), India's national space agency. The Chandrayaan program's primary objective is to explore the Moon, study its surface features, and gather scientific data.

Chandrayaan-1

launched on October 22, 2008, was India's first mission to the Moon. The spacecraft was equipped with various scientific instruments, including a high-resolution remote sensing camera, a lunar laser-ranging instrument, and a mini synthetic aperture radar. It successfully entered the lunar orbit on November 8, 2008, and operated until August 2009. Chandrayaan-1's most significant achievement was the discovery of water molecules on the Moon's surface.

Chandrayaan-2

launched on July 22, 2019, aimed to further advance India's lunar exploration efforts. It consisted of an orbiter, a lander named Vikram, and a rover named Pragyan. The lander-rover module was designed to land near the Moon's south pole, a region of particular scientific interest due to the presence of water ice in permanently shadowed craters. However, during the landing attempt on September 7, 2019, contact with the lander was lost just moments before touchdown, and the mission did not achieve a successful soft landing. Nevertheless, the orbiter component of Chandrayaan-2 continues to operate and provide valuable scientific data.

These missions, collectively known as the Chandrayaan program, have significantly contributed to our understanding of the Moon. They have helped scientists gain insights into the Moon's geology, mineralogy, presence of water, and potential for future human exploration. The Indian government and ISRO remain committed to future lunar missions and have plans for Chandrayaan-3, which will aim to land a rover on the lunar surface.
