THE ARAB SPRING The Arab Spring was a series of pro-democracy uprisings and social movements that swept across several countries in the Middle East and North Africa region, starting in late 2010 and early 2011. The term "Arab Spring" is often used to refer to the wave of popular protests, demonstrations, and social unrest that occurred in various countries, calling for political reform, social justice, and an end to authoritarian rule. The Arab Spring began in Tunisia in December 2010, when widespread protests erupted following the self-immolation of a street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi, who was frustrated by economic and political injustice.
